about rurutia

RURUTIA is an obscure, female singer and songwriter in Japan. She's recieved increased popularity among the English J-Music community because of her distinct vocals and mystical melodies (in Japan she's much less popular). RURUTIA leads a mysterious life, attempting to keep her personal life out of the buisness while we, the fans, speculate on almost everything about her. One would guess that she's her mid-late twenties or early thirties at the very most, but that's about all we (the English fans) know. There are only a few photos of her outside of the album artwork, they are provided here.

Career Starting off in 2001, Toshiba Emi made her first single possible -- Itoshigo Yo (My Dear Child). Since then, RURUTIA has released a total of 8 albums and 10 singles. Some of those singles include short films that go along with the song. If you're interested in seeing which singles offer the films, check out her discography. RURUTIA is no longer with Toshiba Emi, however, and has moved her label to Phoenix Records.

tahiti for blissful rain

The alias rurutia actually comes to us from the Tahitian Islands and is a modified version of the word rorotea. The word means something along the lines of blissful rain and can be pronounced both "ru-ru-tee-ah" and "lu-lu-tei-ah". Though we don't know for sure, but RURUTIA could very well have some Tahiti roots in her family. To further the point -- she has released a song entirely in Tahiti (and happens to be the namesake of this site) -- maururu roa (thank you very much).

Vocals and Lyrics

The purpose of this section is to review RURUTIA's overall sound and the composition of her songs. This is for those who haven't tried or are hesitant in trying RURUTIA's music because of what other's tell them. All I can say is give it a try for yourself, but if you want a little insight as to what RURUTIA's music is like, keep reading!

The woman has a beautiful voice that is both light and very soft on the ears. Though her voice may sound breathy and over-exhausted to some, her range is well developed. It carries a sense of innocence and mystery to the ears of many. RURUTIA also has very imaginative lyrics that range from being serious and realistic (Hallelujah, Time Traveler) to a sense of being human and simplicity (Heartdance, ABINTRA). Unlike many modern artists, RURUTIA not only sings about love and heartbreak (Toroimerai), but standing up for yourself with a bit of uncliched anti-war thrown into the mix. She's one singer who isn't afraid to be diverse in her lyrics or her vocal range.

Her sound also proves to be a very diverse component in her music. I, personally, like RURUTIA's sound as it's not what you hear everyday. RURUTIA's music is sometimes described as new age, electronica, experimental, or pop. I say she combines all of these and doesn't have any specific style that she follows in composing her music. Although many of her songs, combined with her voice, give a very child-like, innocent atmosphere (Yuruginai Utsukushii Mono, Hohoemi no Maria), others give way to a chilling or whimsical mood such as Chou no Mori or Hallelujah.
